The Ins and Outs of Microneedling

What is Microneedling

Microneedling is considered a form of Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT). Tiny needles puncture the surface of the skin at a very high speed (and at a specific depth) which leaves the integrity of the skin intact but triggers a natural repair mechanism to initiate the proliferation of new cells, collagen and capillaries. As a result, skin heals up stronger, healthier and more youthful. You are basically tricking your skin into repairing itself.

What should you expect at your microneedling session?

During the treatment, numbing cream is applied to your face. The numbing helps to reduce discomfort. There should be no pain, but areas like the forehead or jawline may be a little more sensitive (as these areas do not have much fat). Using a topical Hyaluronic acid, a microneedling pen moves in small, circular motions all over the face.

Is there any bleeding?

In some patients, there is pinpoint bleeding, especially around the jawline which is normal.

What should you expect after treatment?

The next day, your skin may look like it has mild sunburn, a little swollen, and you may have a few pinpoint marks. Within 24 – 48 hours, your skin should be back to normal and makeup may be applied.

When will you see results?

While many patients will see an improvement in their skin after one treatment, it will take 8 – 12 weeks to see the full results. You will benefit from one treatment, but a series of 4 – 6 treatments are recommended.

Microneedling is a great alternative to traditional treatments like lasers (so it can be used on all skin tones) to harness your body’s natural repair mechanisms to treat a multitude of concerns, such as scars, (acne, raised scars), stretch marks, large pores, creepy skin, wrinkles, and fine lines.
